About Athens
Athens is a consolidated city-county in Georgia, located about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university, helped drive its initial growth as an R1 research institution. In 1991, the original City of Athens abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County.
