Fort Harrison, located in Varina Gardens, was an important component of the Confederate defenses of Richmond during the American Civil War. It was the largest fort in a series that extended from New Market Road to the James River, protecting Chaffin's Bluff on the James. The fort was named after Lieutenant William Harrison, a Confederate engineer.
