Cottonwood Heights sits on the eastern side of Salt Lake Valley, along its east bench. The community evolved from a census‑designated place into an incorporated city after a 2004 referendum. It lies south of Holladay and Murray, east of Midvale, and north of Sandy within the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.
