About Ione
Ione is a city in Amador County, California, with a population of 5,141 as of the 2020 census. It served as an important supply center on the main road to the Mother Lode and Southern Mines during the California gold rush. The town was once known by the nicknames "Bedbug" and "Freeze Out."

Preston Castle
Located in Ione, California, Preston Castle was a reform school proposed by and named after state senator Edward Myers Preston. The cornerstone was laid in December 1890, and the institution opened in June 1894 when seven wards were transferred from San Quentin State Prison.
It is considered one of the oldest and best-known reform schools in the United States.
