Lamesa is a city and county seat of Dawson County, Texas, located south of Lubbock on the Llano Estacado. With a population of 8,674 as of the 2020 census, it has a long history rooted in cotton farming and was founded in 1903. The Preston E. Smith prison unit, named for former governor of Texas, sits just outside its limits.
