Located about 46 miles northwest of Chicago, McHenry serves as a city in McHenry County with a population of 27,135. It was formerly the county seat when the region included adjoining Lake County to the east. The city and county derive their name from Major William McHenry, a prominent US Army officer in the Black Hawk War.
