Oshawa sits on the Lake Ontario shoreline in Southern Ontario, approximately 60 kilometres east of downtown Toronto. Serving as the largest municipality in Durham and an eastern anchor for the Greater Toronto Area, the city derives its name from the Ojibwa term aazhawe, meaning 'the crossing place'.

Located at 72 Queen Street, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is a public art gallery featuring Canadian contemporary and modern artwork. It holds the largest collection of its kind in the Regional Municipality of Durham.
The building was designed by noted Canadian architect Arthur Erickson and the collection focuses on works by Painters Eleven.
