Shamokin lies in Northumberland County and is surrounded by Coal Township at the western edge of the Anthracite Coal Region within the Susquehanna River Valley. The city’s name comes from a Saponi Indian village, Schahamokink. Its population was 6,942 according to the 2020 census.
