About Vandalia
Vandalia serves as the county seat of Fayette County and sits along the Kaskaskia River, northeast of the Greater St. Louis area. It once functioned as Illinois' state capital from 1819 to 1839 before government operations moved to Springfield. The original State House building, constructed in 1836, is now preserved at the Vandalia State House State Historic Site.
