About Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro
Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro serves as the municipal seat in Michoacán, established after the original village was destroyed during the 1943 formation of the Parícutin volcano. The settlement was named Nuevo to distinguish it from the historic site buried beneath ash and lava nearby. Visitors can still see the top of the old church protruding from the volcanic deposits.
