Capital of the Avocado
About Uruapan
Uruapan del Progreso stands as the second largest city in Michoacán, situated at the western edge of the Purépecha highlands near the Tierra Caliente region. Conquered by the Spanish in 1522 and laid out in 1534, it served as the state capital during the French Intervention. Today, the city functions as the distribution hub for most of Mexico's avocado crop.
