San Pedro Pochutla serves as a commercial and transportation hub in southeastern Oaxaca, situated next to the Pacific Ocean. The city sits at the junction of Highway 200 and Highway 175, with most of its structures built on a lakebed that was drained during the colonial period. Its name means 'place of kapok trees'.
