Yellowknife serves as the capital and only city in Canada's Northwest Territories. Situated on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, it lies approximately 400 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. The community is located on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River.
